Charles Maxwell Simpson, "Max" for short, is a partner at Cosgrove Law Group, LLC. Mr. Simpson's practice focuses on written and courtroom advocacy. However, Mr. Simpson also advises clients on corporate transactions and regulatory compliance matters. He provides a fresh perspective to our business clients, helping update their best practices to prevent litigation before it begins. Mr. Simpson has substantial experience investigating and defending civil claims in state court across Missouri. He has also successfully advocated for plaintiffs in consumer protection, fraud, negligence, investment fraud, executive compensation, and odometer rollback matters. Mr. Simpson also provides estate planning advice for our individual clients, preparing wills and trusts tailored to each client’s individual goals. He currently serves on the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis's Securities Law Section as Secretary.
Prior to joining Cosgrove Law Group, LLC, Mr. Simpson was a senior associate at Brown & James, P.C., a St. Louis, Missouri based insurance defense firm. In his capacity as a senior associate, Mr. Simpson represented both large and small insurance providers as well as homeowners, auto, and business policyholders. While at BJPC, he defended dram shop, product design/manufacturing defect, employment discrimination, mold/chemical contamination, construction defect, premises liability, motor vehicle accident, vexatious refusal, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and subrogation cases from initial complaint to settlement or trial.
Before BJPC, Mr. Simpson worked with Spencer Fane, a large Kansas City, Missouri based firm, as the firm's document review specialist. In this position, he designed protocols for intake, review, and digitization of voluminous e-discovery/corporate records related to complex environmental, corporate, and education litigation. Mr. Simpson's protocols and subsequent productions were specifically designed to comply with court orders and administrative regulations relating to the maintenance of records and property to avoid spoliation.
Prior to working with Spencer Fane, Mr. Simpson interned with the Kansas University Center for Technology Commercialization drafting patentability opinions for intellectual property created at Kansas University Medical Center. In this capacity, he also facilitated the generation of technology transfer agreements between the University and Fortune 500 Companies. During his time in the UMKC Intellectual Property and Entrepreneurial Legal Services Clinic, Mr. Simpson worked with local entrepreneurs and inventors to establish their businesses and protect their products from infringement by competitors.
Mr. Simpson earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Missouri - Columbia and his law degree from the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Law where he graduated cum laude. He served on the UMKC Law Review Board as Literary Editor and Chapter Vice-President of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Fraternity. Mr. Simpson currently sits on the Crestwood Animal Shelter Board of Directors.
